NTHMP Assessments, Reports, and Reviews

In compliance with the law that was in effect December 2006 to April 2017 (TWEA, P.L. 109-479), the NTHMP periodically requested an outside review of its work, activities, progress, and challenges.

Note: the updated Tsunami Warning, Education, and Research Act of 2017 (TWERA), P.L. 115-25, no longer requires periodic NTHMP external review. See TWERA here.

The following assessments and reports have been developed on behalf of the NTHMP and/or its subcommittees under provisions of TWEA:

• 2001 NTHMP Assessment Reports
  Five independent reviewers wrote reports about the NTHMP that were prepared as part of an International Tsunami Symposium hosted by the University of Washington, Seattle, WA, August 9-10, 2001.
• 2007 NTHMP 5-Year Recommendations and Presentations
  Self-directed outside review conducted during 2007


• Tsunami Warning and Preparedness: An Assessment of the U.S. Tsunami Program and the Nation's Preparedness Efforts
  Published 2011.

This study was conducted by the Ocean Studies Board, Division of Earth and Life Studies, National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences at the direction of Congress through the Tsunami Warning and Education Act of 2006. This study looked at the overall NOAA Tsunami Program as well as the NTHMP. The NTHMP Leadership determined that this study was more than sufficient to meet the need for a five-year review of the NTHMP.

• 2017 NTHMP Assessment Report and Addenda
  Five independent reviewers wrote a single report about the NTHMP with two addenda on sections where consensus could not be reached. Published June 29, 2017.
